How to Store Christmas Trees and Festive Decorations Space-Efficiently
Christmas trees, Lunar New Year decorations, Halloween props... items used once a year somehow take up the most space. Store them badly and next year you'll find tangled lights and shattered baubles. Here are our festive storage tips.
Christmas trees: disassemble by tier
Take an artificial tree apart tier by tier, gently bind the branches of each tier with cling film or cable ties, and pack upright or flat into the original box. If the original box is gone, use a long rigid box to avoid crushing.
Tangle-free fairy lights
Wind each string of lights around stiff cardboard or a cord winder — one string per winder. Test each string before packing and throw away broken ones, so there are no surprises next year.
Baubles and fragile ornaments
- The original compartment box is the safest option
- Without one, use egg cartons or compartment organisers to separate pieces
- Wrap each item in tissue or bubble wrap, and mark the box "fragile"
How does this fit in a Hong Kong flat?
A six-foot tree with decorations can swallow an entire cabinet. Once-a-year items are perfect for off-site storage: pack small decorations into a door-to-door mini box, and store the boxed tree with door-to-door mini storage. Book delivery before the festive season and collection after — your flat stays clutter-free all year.
An unboxing list matters
Label every box with its contents (e.g. "Tree tiers 1-3", "Lights ×5 strings"). Next year, decorate the whole flat in half a day by following the list.
