Humid Season Storage Guide: Keep Clothes and Furniture Mould-Free

19 Aug 2026Organising Tips防潮

During Hong Kong's humid spring and rainy season, indoor humidity often exceeds 90%, and clothing, leather goods and wooden furniture are the first victims of mould. Here are the damp-proofing tips our team shares with customers.

Why does Hong Kong get mouldy so easily?

Mould thrives once humidity rises above 70%. With the humid spell in March and April followed by the summer rainy season, walls and wardrobe panels stay damp for months — seasonal clothes stored at the bottom of a cupboard often come out covered in mould spots.

Three steps for damp-proofing clothes

  • Wash and dry thoroughly before packing: sweat or slight dampness is a breeding ground for mould
  • Compress thick winter clothing in vacuum bags to reduce exposure to moisture
  • Place desiccants or moisture beads in each box, and replace them regularly

Take extra care with leather and handbags

Leather hates swings between damp and dry. Wipe clean and air-dry before storing, use a breathable dust bag rather than a sealed plastic bag, and stuff the bag with paper to hold its shape and absorb moisture.

Wooden furniture and appliances

Keep wooden furniture slightly away from walls so air can circulate. Power up rarely-used appliances from time to time to prevent internal moisture damage.
